| Vaughan, Favreau de-ice their careers, save NHL with a televised Sega hockey tournament |
Favreau, Vaughn To Play Cancelled NHL Season on Sega Genesis

LOS ANGELES, CA (GSN) - Immediately after the NHL season was cancelled, actors Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau announced plans to play an entire season of NHL hockey on EA Sports' NHL'93 for Sega Genesis. Public access channels will air their tournament, and award the winner a Stanley Cup replica during a two-hour Swingers Relived finale.
Stuart Scott quipped about the deal on last night?s SportsCenter: "With the NHL freezing up for the season, hockey players' heads will now be made to bleed only on video game consoles. But at least the men who once 'Did The Thing With The Thing' on Sega's NHL '94 are also helping the troubled league stay visible."
Vince Vaughn, who has curiously more hair now than when he starred in the 1995 cult classic Swingers, pointed out that the Relived tourney won't be played on NHL '94 as in the movie, but on NHL '93 which has full-scale fighting as opposed to just head-bleeding.
"I love hockey, especially the ass-kickings," said Vaughn. "Since the clowns running the sport can't get the season going, Jon and I are going to take it from here. I mean shit, this has gotta be better for my career than starring next to John Travolta. And maybe it can help the NHL too."
Favreau concedes his career is also on ice. He plans to put his Bravo show, Dinner for Five, on hiatus until the Sega NHL season is completed. The 812 or so disappointed watchers of the Bravo show will be lulled into submission with a free special pilot episode DVD starring the original cast of Party of Five.
Hockey fans will be able to watch highlights of Favreau and Vaughn's Sega NHL season on local public access television. Public access stations are experimenting with the broadcast of these virtual games in preparation for the NHL's return to TV.
"There's been a lot of talk about us getting NHL games should pro hockey return next year," said local access channel 453 General Manager Glen Thomas from his Sheboygan, Wisconsin station. "We're not sure we want to boot off the alien conspiracy guy or the macrame lady to air these games. We'll have to see video game broadcast ratings first. But I think the macrame lady will be tough for the NHL to beat."
For their part, Favreau and Vaughn are looking forward to reuniting to play the season, while reliving their Swingers glory days.
"When the kid's not looking, the ice will run with the blood of Gretzky's head," said Vaughn about his intentions to kick his friend's team's ass. "You might not be able to cash an NHL paycheck this year, but you can take that to the bank."
